Multi-media Installation
Udu
A ceremonial sound installation combines the resonant tones of ceramic Udu drums with the subtle, rhythmic dripping of water onto a metal plate and ceramic pieces. Originating from Africa, the Udu—a water jug with an added hole—was traditionally played by Igbo women in ceremonies, producing deep bass tones with a swift hand motion over its larger opening. In this installation, a contact microphone under the metal plate amplifies the sound of water drips from melting ice pockets within a fabric arrangement dyed with natural colors, creating a layered auditory experience in harmony with the rhythmic beats of the Udu drum.
